On the morning of January 13th 2006 the Squad was requested to respond with 25 (Pattenburg) Fire & Rescue to the Grand Colonial Restaurant for a structural collapse with initial reports of 10-12 victims trapped. Upon dispatch EMS Lt. Rega requested that the Hunterdon County Technical Rescue Task Force be dispatched as well due to the magnitude of the initial dispatch. 45-54 was the first unit to arrive on scene and found the truss roof and concrete block wall collapsed. 45-54 reported that all victims with the exception of one DOA were clear of the collapse zone. 45-56, 45-57, TRU 45, and BLS unit 45-52 arrived on scene shortly there after along with a BLS unit from 25 Rescue and units form 25 Fire. The HCTRTF was cancelled by the request of command due no live victims trapped. The BLS units cared for four workers with minor injuries while the rescue crew stood by while the New Jersey state police conducted their investigation. Upon completion of the State Police investigation the crews from 45-56 and 45-57 went to work to free the body of the trapped worker. The crew created space by cutting away the fallen trusses with a chainsaw, then utilized a hydraulic ram to then lift the concrete wall and stabilized it with Paratech struts and wood cribbing. Upon freeing the body it was transferred to an awaiting BLS unit and transported to the hospital for further investigation. |
