North Hunterdon High School student Sarah Klepper has taken Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad patients’ pulse and blood pressure. She makes sure ambulances are stocked with every possibly needed supply. And if needed, Sarah knows she can help give life-saving CPR.
Just 16, Sarah is among the young CFARS volunteers called cadets. She is enrolled in EMT class and is preparing to take the exams that will allow her to become an EMT candidate, and then a full Clinton EMT when she turns 18.
“I’ve already learned so much,” said Sarah. “No matter what type of calls you get, you are experiencing something nobody else gets to experience: You’re the person who helps, and will help possibly save someone’s life.”

Sarah said she’s always wanted to help people, and was drawn to do so through providing medical care because as someone who has epilepsy, she knows what it’s like to need help. In addition to her classes at North Hunterdon, Sarah takes nursing classes at Hunterdon County Polytech. “We’re learning how to take blood pressure, how to take respiration rate, how to do pulse, and I feel a step ahead because I learned how to do those things on the squad,” she said.
After graduation, she plans to study nursing at Rutgers – close enough to home that she can continue to work her volunteer shifts with CFARS. She believes CFARS experience will help her do well in college, and even before that, prove to admissions officers how serious she is about her chosen profession.
“This will help me become a better nurse, because I will have experienced pretty much everything there is,” she said.
