Deputy Chief Bucky Buchanan requested the donation after learning about the company's Canine Saves campaign to get the life-saving masks into the hands of first responders in communities where the company's clients live.
'Masks similar to these were recently used on a house fire and helped as part of the team effort to save a dog and 2 cats in Raritan Township" stated Chief Frank Setnicky of Clinton Squad. "Adding the additional units will improve the chances of not only us helping human victims, but also our family pets" after an emergency.
The volunteers and staff of CFARS recently trained on the new masks prior to placing them on 3 ambulances, REHAB units and Heavy Rescue unit. Members were joined by our own family members who helped play "victims" for the demonstrations.
When fire strikes at home, family pets are at greatest risk because they are often unable to leave the house. An estimated 40,000 die each year from smoke inhalation. The cone-shaped masks are designed to fit over the pet's snout over. Each set includes three sizes that fit a wide range of pets - from small mammals to giant breed dogs -- and connect to standard oxygen tanks the rescue teams carry.
To ensure rescuers know there are pets in a home, Canine Company is offering free "Pets Inside" decals to families in CFARS service area. To request a decal, go to https://www.canincecompany.com/topic/petdecal.aspx.
"Our company was founded by a family of pet lovers and our mission is to help other families keep their pets healthy, safe and happy, " said Renee Coughlin of Canine Company. "We do that with the services we offer and it's focus of our charitable programs, too." Last year, Canine Company donated more than 120 sets of masks to first responders across the Northeast, including to 44 New Jersey fire departments and EMS squads.
