HIGH BRIDGE - Firefighters from nine departments battled a mulch fire well into Wednesday night.
The fire, at the borough's mulch facility on Main Street, was reported at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Because of the amount of leaves and tree branches on fire and its location downtown, a number of fire departments from surrounding communities also responded, according to those on the scene. A front-end loader with a backhoe was used to dig into the pile and get water deeper into the mulch.
A number of tankers and tenders were used to supply water to the pumper fire trucks. Crews were still working into Wednesday night to extinguish the fire.
Responding to the fire were fire departments from High Bridge, Glen Gardner, Lebanon Borough, Lebanon Township, Clinton, Annandale Hose Company (Clinton Township), Califon, Quakertown (Franklin Township), the State Forest Fire Service and Hunterdon County Fire Coordinators. Also responding were the High Bridge and Clinton rescue squads and borough police.
