| On the afternoon of Sunday, February 9, 2015, the Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad was requested into Clinton Township for an injury on a construction site. BLS 4554 went responding from our station and the crew was quickly updated by the 9-1-1 dispatcher that access might be an issue. |  MSU455 was able to make access directly into the structure to assist in evacuation of the patient to awaiting ambulance. |
MSU455, known as ASAP#14, was received from the NJ EMS Task Force to assist in weather events like this, when traditional ambulances may not be able to navigate terrain. While responding, the dispatcher, asking pre-arrival information from the caller, determined that access due to recent weather events, might cause the ambulance difficulty in accessing the patient, up a long access road into a construction site in the Beaver Brook development. Upon arrival, the BLS unit found an over 100 yard access road that was impassable except by a 4x4 vehicle or ATV. A second crew at our station immediately deployed our Medical Support Unit ASAP#14 (MSU455) to the scene to assist. The ASAP is a specialty vehicle on a Polaris Ranger chassis, equipped like a small ambulance, but meant for off-road access.
MSU455 along with crew made access to the BLS Crew who had walked into the site, and was able to safely load the patient onto the unit's stretcher, for transport out to the Ambulance who was waiting on the cleared street. This allowed both the crew and patient a safer alternative than carrying the patient in a stokes basket by foot.
Previous to this emergency deployment, this grant-funded unit has deployed on emergency calls into Lebanon Township for a hiker assist, and a fall victim in the Town of Clinton, in addition to several community standby events. CFARS was the recipient of this unit through the New Jersey EMS Task Force, after a competitive grant process in 2014, and arrived to our station in the summer of 2014. This unit is available both locally, countywide, as well as part of the Task Force to respond anywhere requested, both in and outside New Jersey.
