This afternoon at just around 2:30pm, the Hunterdon County Technical Rescue Task Force was alerted mutual aid into Somerset County for a reported worker entrapped in machinery at the Gibraltar Quarry off Rt 601. Units from the Clinton First Aid and Rescue Squad, Inc. and Flemington-Raritan First Aid and Rescue Squad responded under the direction of the Hunterdon County, NJ - Department of Public Safety with 3 Heavy Rescue trucks and 2 support vehicles. Our units were there to assist the on scene personnel from Montgomery & Hillsborough Townships, who were initially called to the incident. The male worker was trapped in an excavator deep into the quarry, when an extremely large bolder broke free above the position he was working, and partially collapsed the cab on the machinery he was operating. With the HCTRTF arrival, units from across Somerset County had additional support in their rescue efforts. Already operating for approximately half an hour, initial response teams had been joined by Somerville Rescue Squad’s Technical Rescue team and together, a joint rescue plan was established. An additional Technical Rescue team was also brought in from Mercer County, known as Task Force 801, made up of several organizations throughout Mercer County. Rescuer’s continued to work and freed the trapped worker in approximately 90 minutes from time of call, and was turned over to NorthStar Medevac for transport to a trauma center for further treatment of injuries. During the time the patient was entrapped, he was being treated by a combined EMS team from Somerset Medical Center’s MICU, NorthStar Medevac flight crew, and the BLS teams from Hillsborough EMS & Montgomery EMS - Squad 47 Rescue, who both had ambulances on site. A total of 18 personnel from the Task Force responded from the 3 member agencies. Comments are closed.
