Just before noon today, the Clinton Rescue Squad was dispatched to Round Valley Recreation Area for the report of 2 people swimming to shore after their boat capsized off the north dam. Initial responding units included 2 BLS Units, Clinton Police and NJ Park Police. The arriving units, who were on scene in less than 10 minutes, found debris and the boat, however no swimmers were located. A rescue operation was commenced with 2 rescue boats deployed from Clinton Rescue, and additional units from Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit, Somerset County Prosecutors Dive Team, and the NJ State Police T.E.A.M.S. unit. Air search units from NJSP’s Aviation Unit were also dispatched. Clinton’s two boats, staffed with rescue swimmers and boat operators, located the last known location of the missing boaters, and began a grid search of the area until additional units could arrive. After about 1 hour of surface water searching, additional requests were made to the West Jersey K-9 Search & Rescue dogs to assist, along with Hunterdon County OEM’s Mobile Command Post.
At approximately 2:00pm, after 2 hours of rescue searches on the water and ground, the scene was turned over the Hunterdon County Prosecutors Office, who assumed command of the recovery operation to follow, in conjunction with the NJ State Police.
A total of 19 CFARS members, 2 boats, 2 BLS Ambulances, Special Services, REHAB & 2 cars were staffed and working on scene. CFARS continued to support the operation with 2 rescue boats and crew until just after 7:30 pm, when units were released by NJSP.
